Bordly – The Daily Geography Guessing Game
How well do you know the countries of the world? Bordly is a daily geography guessing game where you have to figure out three countries every day. But you don't have to guess blindly: after every guess, you receive new information that helps you get closer to the answer.
The game combines the simple daily challenge concept of Wordle with geographical reasoning.
How does Bordly work?
Every day, you have to find three different countries. The challenges gradually become more difficult: Easy, Medium, Hard.
Everyone gets the same daily challenges, so you can even compare your results with your friends and see how you performed on the same challenge.
The goal is simple: guess the correct country in as few attempts as possible.
The game helps you after every guess
One of the most interesting aspects of Bordly is that even a wrong guess isn't necessarily a wasted attempt.
When you enter a country, you receive several pieces of information about it in relation to the target country.
How far away is it?
The game shows you how many kilometers apart the two countries' capitals are, measured as the straight-line distance.
If the distance is several thousand kilometers, for example, it is probably worth looking at a completely different continent or region.
Which direction should you look?
The compass shows you the direction of the target country relative to your guess.
An animated arrow helps you find your way, so on your next guess you can take into account whether you should be looking north, south, east, or west.
Is it a neighboring country?
This is one of the most useful pieces of information.
If your guess shares a border with the target country, the game will indicate it separately. That means you're already very close to the answer.
For example, if you know that the target country borders Hungary, you've already narrowed down the possibilities considerably.
The "temperature" shows how close you are
Bordly uses five different levels to indicate how close your guess is to the target country.
Hot – within 500 km
Warm – within 2,000 km
Cool – within 5,000 km
Cold – within 8,000 km
Freezing – 8,000 km or more
This is especially useful when you have no idea where the target country might be. If your guess is "freezing," for example, it may be worth looking in a completely different part of the world. On the other hand, a "hot" result means you're getting very close.
Unlimited guesses
In Bordly, you can make as many guesses as you want.
There is no six-guess limit like in Wordle, so the game is more about thinking and reasoning than having your attempt end because of one wrong guess.
Every guess is added to your history, so you can look back at your previous attempts at any time.
Stuck? Ask for a hint!
If you've already mentally searched every continent but still can't find the answer, you can use the Hint button.
It reveals the first letter of the target country's name.
You can use the hint once for each challenge, so it's worth choosing the right moment. You may not need it after your first few guesses, but on a difficult challenge, it can be just enough to point you in the right direction.
You can also give up
If you've completely run out of ideas, you can give up on the challenge.
Bordly will then reveal the correct answer. Giving up is marked separately, so it's clear whether you found the country yourself or simply revealed the solution.
Why is Bordly interesting?
Bordly isn't just another country quiz.
In a traditional geography quiz, you usually either know the answer or you don't. If someone asks you what the capital of Bolivia is, for example, there isn't much room for deduction.
In Bordly, however, the game continuously gives you new information.
Your first guess might be completely wrong. But if you learn that:
you're 4,000 kilometers away,
you need to look east,
and your guess doesn't share a border with the target,
you already have some useful clues.
Your next guess gives you more information, and after a few attempts, the picture gradually starts to come together.
That's why the game doesn't just test your geographical knowledge. It also tests how well you can reason from the information available to you.
A new challenge every day
Bordly brings you three new challenges every day.
The same country won't appear again too frequently, so you don't have to worry about seeing the same answers every few days.
The game includes 195 countries in total: the 193 UN member states, plus Vatican City and Palestine.
Certain disputed or non-UN member territories, such as Kosovo, Taiwan, and Western Sahara, are not included in the game.
Three countries, and that's it for today
Bordly is deliberately designed not to become a game that takes hours to complete.
Once you've solved all three daily challenges, that's it for today.
That's all for today – come back tomorrow!
Tomorrow, three new countries will be waiting for you, with another Easy, Medium, and Hard challenge.
Ready?
If you enjoy geography games, maps, or simply putting your knowledge to the test, Bordly is a great way to spend a few minutes each day exercising your brain.
Guess a country, check the distance and direction, use the information you've gathered – and try to find all three answers of the day.
